DEVORA scenarios for volcanic risk mitigation

Several eruption scenarios set the scene for developing better volcanic risk mitigation and asset management practices.

The scenarios sit within the Determining Volcanic Risk in Auckland (DEVORA) research programme – a collaborative effort involving GNS Science, numerous New Zealand-based universities, and local and central government agencies to improve hazard and risk management in Auckland.

Under DEVORA, there have been advances in the best approach to assessing and dealing with volcanic hazards and societal risk.

New Zealand’s most populous city sits on the Auckland Volcanic Field (AVF), posing a major threat to people and infrastructure.

Volcanic eruption scenarios can integrate findings from various disciples to help achieve better outcomes and support the goals of stakeholders.

The scenarios are based on research on AVF hazards, and eruptions from around the world.
